Dental fillings, Stourbridge

Strong, comfortable
and completely natural

We use tooth-coloured composite resin to repair decayed or damaged teeth. Unlike old-fashioned metal amalgam, composite fillings bond directly to the tooth, look completely natural and require less removal of healthy enamel.

When you might need one

Reasons you might
need a filling

Fillings are one of the most common dental treatments. Here are the situations where we would recommend one.

01
Decay
Tooth decay and cavities

When bacteria break down enamel and create a cavity, we clean out the decay and restore the tooth with composite before it spreads deeper or causes pain.

02
Wear
Worn or eroded enamel

Acid erosion, grinding or abrasive brushing can wear away enamel over time. A filling rebuilds the lost structure and protects the sensitive dentine beneath.

03
Damage
Chipped or cracked tooth

Small chips and cracks expose the inner tooth to bacteria and temperature changes. Composite can restore the shape and seal the tooth in a single visit.

04
Replacement
Replacing old amalgam

Many patients choose to replace metal fillings with tooth-coloured composite. We remove the amalgam safely and place a natural-looking restoration in its place.

05
Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity

Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods can indicate exposed dentine or early decay. A filling seals and protects the area, significantly reducing discomfort.

06
Prevention
Deep grooves and fissures

Some teeth have deep grooves that trap bacteria and are prone to decay. A preventive fissure sealant or small filling protects them before the problem starts.

What to expect

What happens
during your filling

Most fillings are straightforward and completed in a single appointment. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you sit down.

01
Assessment
We check the tooth first

Your dentist will examine the affected area and take an X-ray if needed to understand the full extent of the decay or damage. We explain exactly what we find and discuss the best approach before we begin. There are no surprises.

02
Getting comfortable
Numb before we start

We apply a local anaesthetic to the area and give it time to work fully. You will feel some pressure but no pain. If you feel anything at all, raise your hand and we will stop. We never start until you are completely comfortable.

03
Placing the filling
Composite applied with care

We remove only the decayed or damaged material, then apply composite resin in thin layers, shaping it carefully to match your tooth. Each layer is hardened with a curing light before the next is added. The result is a strong, seamless restoration.

04
Finishing
Polished and ready to go

Once the filling is in place, we shape and polish it so it feels completely natural. We check your bite carefully to make sure everything is even and comfortable. Most patients leave feeling the difference immediately.

Aftercare advice

Looking after
your new filling

Sensitivity

Some sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure is completely normal for a few days after a filling. It settles on its own. If it persists beyond two weeks or gets worse, let us know.

Diet

Avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours while the composite fully sets. After that you can eat normally. If your bite feels uneven, come back and we will adjust it quickly.

Staining

Composite can gradually discolour with heavy consumption of coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. Good oral hygiene and regular hygiene appointments will keep it looking its best for longer.

Longevity

With good care, composite fillings typically last seven to ten years. Regular check-ups let us monitor them and replace them before they become a problem. Look after it and it will look after you.

When to call us: If your bite feels wrong, sensitivity does not ease, or the filling chips or falls out, contact us and we will see you promptly.

Common questions

Dental filling FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most often about composite fillings at Wollaston Dental Practice.

01Does getting a filling hurt?

No. We use a local anaesthetic to numb the area completely before we start. You may feel some pressure but no pain. If you feel anything at all, raise your hand and we will stop.

02How long do composite fillings last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, composite fillings typically last seven to ten years. They can be repaired or replaced easily if needed.

03Can I replace my old metal fillings?

Yes. We can safely remove old amalgam fillings and replace them with tooth-coloured composite. Many patients choose to do this for aesthetic reasons or when an old filling needs replacing anyway.

04Will my filling be noticeable?

No. We carefully match the composite shade to your natural tooth colour. Once polished, it blends seamlessly and is virtually invisible — even to you.

05How do I know if I need a filling?

Sometimes you can see or feel a cavity, but often there are no symptoms at all. That is why regular check-ups are so important — we catch decay early, when treatment is simpler and less expensive.

06Can I eat straight after a filling?

Yes, but we recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours. You may also notice some sensitivity to temperature for a few days — this is normal and settles on its own.

01 · Pain
Does getting a filling hurt?

No. Before we begin, we apply a local anaesthetic and give it time to work fully. You will feel some pressure during the procedure but no pain. If you feel anything at all, simply raise your hand and we will stop immediately. We never rush this step.

02 · Longevity
How long do composite fillings last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, composite fillings typically last between seven and ten years. Avoiding very hard foods and excessive staining drinks will help extend their life. If they do wear or chip over time, they are straightforward to repair or replace.

03 · Amalgam
Can I replace my old metal fillings?

Yes. We can remove old amalgam fillings safely and replace them with tooth-coloured composite. Many patients choose to do this for cosmetic reasons, or simply when an old filling reaches the end of its life and needs replacing anyway. We will advise you honestly on whether replacement is worthwhile.

04 · Aesthetics
Will my filling be noticeable?

No. We carefully match the composite resin to your natural tooth shade before placing it. Once polished and finished, the restoration blends seamlessly with the surrounding tooth. Most patients find it impossible to spot even in a mirror.

05 · Diagnosis
How do I know if I need a filling?

Sometimes you can see a cavity or feel sensitivity or pain. But often early decay has no symptoms at all, which is why regular check-ups are so important. We use examination and X-rays to catch decay early, when a small filling is all that is needed rather than something more complex later on.

06 · Eating
Can I eat straight after a filling?

Yes. Composite fillings set immediately with the curing light, so you can eat as soon as the anaesthetic wears off. We recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours. Some temperature sensitivity in the days following is completely normal and settles on its own.
