Why patients choose it

The benefits of
composite bonding

Composite bonding delivers significant cosmetic improvements with minimal intervention. Here is why it is one of our most popular treatments.

01
Minimal intervention
No drilling required

In most cases, composite bonding does not require any removal of tooth structure. We simply add resin on top of the existing tooth, making it one of the least invasive cosmetic treatments available.

02
Speed
Done in one visit

Unlike veneers or crowns, which require laboratory fabrication and a second appointment, composite bonding is completed chair-side in a single session. You leave with your finished smile the same day.

03
Flexibility
Easy to change

If your goals change or you want to upgrade to porcelain veneers later, bonding can be adjusted or replaced. There is no long-term lock-in, making it a great starting point for cosmetic improvement.

04
Cost
More accessible than veneers

Composite bonding typically costs significantly less than porcelain veneers while delivering excellent aesthetic results. For many patients, it is the most sensible starting point for cosmetic improvement.

05
Aesthetics
Natural-looking results

Modern composite resins are highly translucent and shade-matched precisely to your teeth. Sculpted by hand, the result integrates naturally with your smile and is virtually undetectable to others.

06
Repairability
Easy to repair and maintain

If bonding chips or wears over time, it can be touched up or repaired quickly and cost-effectively. With proper care, composite bonding typically lasts five to eight years before needing attention.

What happens at

01
Consultation
Understanding what you want

We begin with a thorough consultation to understand exactly what you would like to change about your smile. We assess your teeth, discuss realistic expectations and confirm that composite bonding is the right treatment for your goals. If there is a better option available, we will tell you. We take photographs so you can see what we are working with.

02
Shade and design
Choosing the right shape and shade

We select a composite shade that matches or enhances your natural teeth, depending on your preference. If you are whitening your teeth first, we recommend doing so before bonding so the composite can be matched to your final shade. We discuss the shape and length changes we are going to make so there are no surprises.

03
Application
Sculpted by hand

We prepare the tooth surface with a mild etching solution to help the resin bond securely, then apply composite in thin layers, shaping it by hand to achieve the desired form. Each layer is hardened with a curing light before the next is applied. No drilling and no anaesthetic is needed in the vast majority of cases.

04
Polish and review
Finished and ready to show

Once shaped and cured, we polish the composite to a natural lustre. We check your bite carefully and make any fine adjustments needed. You will see the result immediately, in our practice in Stourbridge, on the same day you came in. We take after photographs to compare and you leave with your new smile already in place.

Aftercare

Looking after your
composite bonding

Staining

Composite can stain with heavy consumption of tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco. Rinsing with water after staining food and drinks and maintaining good hygiene appointments helps keep it looking its best.

Habits

Avoid biting nails, pens or hard foods directly on bonded teeth. Composite is durable but not indestructible. Chewing ice or very hard foods can chip the resin, requiring a repair.

Grinding

If you grind your teeth at night, we recommend wearing a custom-fitted nightguard to protect your bonding. Grinding significantly accelerates wear and can fracture the composite.

Longevity

With proper care, composite bonding typically lasts five to eight years. It can be polished, repaired or replaced as needed. Regular check-ups allow us to monitor it and address any issues early.

Whitening and bonding: Composite resin does not respond to whitening. If you wish to whiten, do so before your bonding treatment so we can match the composite to your final shade.

Considering your options

Bonding vs porcelain veneers

Composite bonding is reversible, single-visit and more accessible. Porcelain veneers last longer and are more stain resistant. Not sure which suits you? We will advise at your consultation.

Common questions

Composite bonding FAQs

Everything patients ask us about composite bonding before booking their consultation at Wollaston Dental Practice.

01Does composite bonding hurt?

In most cases, no. Composite bonding does not require drilling and no anaesthetic is needed. You may feel slight sensitivity if we apply bonding near the gumline, but most patients find it completely comfortable.

02How long does composite bonding last?

With good care, composite bonding typically lasts five to eight years. Avoiding hard foods, wearing a nightguard if you grind and attending regular check-ups all help extend its lifespan.

03Can I whiten my teeth after bonding?

No. Composite resin does not respond to whitening treatments. If you want to whiten, we strongly recommend doing so before bonding so we can match the resin to your final tooth shade.

04How is bonding different from veneers?

Bonding uses resin applied directly to the tooth and is completed in one visit with no drilling. Veneers are thin porcelain shells fabricated in a laboratory and bonded to a prepared tooth. Veneers last longer but cost more and are irreversible.

05How many teeth can be treated at once?

There is no hard limit. Many patients have a full smile makeover with bonding across six to ten front teeth in one or two visits. We plan the treatment in advance so the proportions and shading are designed as a whole smile.

06What if I do not like the result?

Because bonding is reversible, it can be removed or adjusted. We work collaboratively with you throughout to make sure you are happy before we finalise anything. We never rush the shaping and sculpting stage.

01 · Comfort
Does composite bonding hurt?

In the vast majority of cases, composite bonding is completely pain-free. No drilling is required and no anaesthetic is needed. We prepare the tooth surface with a mild etching agent, which you will not feel, and then apply the resin. Some patients notice slight sensitivity if bonding is applied near the gumline, but this settles quickly. It is one of the most comfortable cosmetic treatments we offer.

02 · Longevity
How long does composite bonding last?

With proper care, composite bonding typically lasts between five and eight years. The main factors that affect longevity are diet and habits: biting nails, pens or hard foods puts the bonding at risk, and grinding at night accelerates wear. Regular check-ups allow us to monitor the bonding and carry out any repairs early. When it does eventually need attention, it can be polished, repaired or replaced straightforwardly.

03 · Whitening
Can I whiten my teeth after bonding?

Composite resin does not respond to teeth whitening gel — only natural tooth enamel whitens. This means that if you whiten after bonding, your natural teeth will lighten but the bonded areas will remain the same shade, creating a mismatch. We always recommend whitening first and then matching the composite to your final, whitened shade. If you have existing bonding and want to whiten, we can discuss replacing the bonding after your whitening treatment.

04 · Vs veneers
How is bonding different from veneers?

Composite bonding uses resin applied and shaped directly on the tooth in one visit. No drilling in most cases, no laboratory work. If your goals change, bonding can be adjusted or replaced relatively straightforwardly. Porcelain veneers are thin shells fabricated in a dental laboratory and bonded to a lightly prepared tooth over two or more visits. Veneers offer greater stain resistance, a longer lifespan of ten to fifteen years, and superior aesthetics for more complex cases. They cost more and the tooth preparation is irreversible. For many patients, bonding is the best starting point; for others, veneers are the right long-term investment.

05 · Scope
How many teeth can be treated at once?

There is no fixed limit. Full smile makeovers with bonding across six to ten teeth are common and can often be completed in a single long appointment or across two visits. When treating multiple teeth, we design the smile as a whole: planning the length, shape and shading proportions together before we begin, so the result is cohesive and balanced rather than individual teeth treated in isolation.

06 · Revision
What if I do not like the result?

Because composite bonding is fully reversible, any concerns can be addressed. During the appointment, we shape the resin gradually and check the result at each stage before finalising it. If you are not happy with any aspect once it is complete, we can adjust the shape or remove it entirely. We take our time and work collaboratively throughout, and we do not move on to the finishing stage until you are satisfied.
