We use tooth-coloured composite resin to repair decayed or damaged teeth. Unlike old-fashioned metal amalgam, composite fillings bond directly to the tooth, look completely natural and require less removal of healthy enamel.

Reasons you might
need a filling
Fillings are one of the most common dental treatments. Here are the situations where we would recommend one.
When bacteria break down enamel and create a cavity, we clean out the decay and restore the tooth with composite before it spreads deeper or causes pain.
Acid erosion, grinding or abrasive brushing can wear away enamel over time. A filling rebuilds the lost structure and protects the sensitive dentine beneath.
Small chips and cracks expose the inner tooth to bacteria and temperature changes. Composite can restore the shape and seal the tooth in a single visit.
Many patients choose to replace metal fillings with tooth-coloured composite. We remove the amalgam safely and place a natural-looking restoration in its place.
Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods can indicate exposed dentine or early decay. A filling seals and protects the area, significantly reducing discomfort.
Some teeth have deep grooves that trap bacteria and are prone to decay. A preventive fissure sealant or small filling protects them before the problem starts.

What happens
during your filling
Most fillings are straightforward and completed in a single appointment. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you sit down.

Your dentist will examine the affected area and take an X-ray if needed to understand the full extent of the decay or damage. We explain exactly what we find and discuss the best approach before we begin. There are no surprises.
We apply a local anaesthetic to the area and give it time to work fully. You will feel some pressure but no pain. If you feel anything at all, raise your hand and we will stop. We never start until you are completely comfortable.
We remove only the decayed or damaged material, then apply composite resin in thin layers, shaping it carefully to match your tooth. Each layer is hardened with a curing light before the next is added. The result is a strong, seamless restoration.
Once the filling is in place, we shape and polish it so it feels completely natural. We check your bite carefully to make sure everything is even and comfortable. Most patients leave feeling the difference immediately.
Looking after
your new filling
Some sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure is completely normal for a few days after a filling. It settles on its own. If it persists beyond two weeks or gets worse, let us know.
Avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours while the composite fully sets. After that you can eat normally. If your bite feels uneven, come back and we will adjust it quickly.
Composite can gradually discolour with heavy consumption of coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. Good oral hygiene and regular hygiene appointments will keep it looking its best for longer.
With good care, composite fillings typically last seven to ten years. Regular check-ups let us monitor them and replace them before they become a problem. Look after it and it will look after you.
When to call us: If your bite feels wrong, sensitivity does not ease, or the filling chips or falls out, contact us and we will see you promptly.
