Dental check-ups, Stourbridge

Prevention is always
better than cure

A check-up is about far more than looking for cavities. We examine your teeth, gums, bite, soft tissues and jaw joint, and screen for early signs of oral cancer. Catching problems early means simpler, less costly treatment, and often no treatment at all.

What we check
at every appointment

A thorough check-up covers far more than cavities. Here is everything we assess to give you a complete picture of your oral health.

01
Teeth
Decay and damage

We check every tooth surface for signs of decay, erosion, cracks and wear. Catching a small cavity early means a simple filling rather than a crown or extraction further down the line.

02
Gums
Gum health

We assess the colour, texture and pocket depth of your gums to check for early signs of gingivitis or periodontitis. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and often has no obvious symptoms.

03
Soft tissues
Oral cancer screening

We carefully examine the tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of the mouth and throat for any unusual patches, lumps or sores. Early detection of oral cancer dramatically improves outcomes.

04
Bite and jaw
Bite and jaw joint

We check how your teeth meet, look for signs of grinding or clenching, and assess the jaw joint for any clicking, discomfort or restricted movement that might indicate a developing problem.

05
X-rays
Digital X-rays

When clinically indicated, we take digital X-rays to reveal decay between teeth, bone loss, cysts and other changes invisible to the eye. We use low-dose digital technology throughout.

06
Existing work
Restorations and appliances

We check the condition of any existing fillings, crowns, bridges, implants or dentures to make sure they are still sound and functioning well, and advise if any need attention.

01
Arrival
A warm welcome
from the start

You will be greeted by our friendly team and invited to update any medical history or details before your appointment. New patients are given a little extra time so we can understand your dental background, any concerns you have and what matters to you about your smile.

02
Examination
A thorough look at everything

Your dentist examines all your teeth, gums, bite, soft tissues and jaw joint. We measure gum pockets, check for signs of wear or grinding, screen for oral cancer, and take digital X-rays if they are due or clinically needed. Nothing is rushed.

03
Discussion
Honest, clear findings

We explain everything we find in plain language, show you X-rays where relevant and give you a clear picture of your current oral health. If nothing needs doing, we tell you so. If treatment is recommended, we explain what it involves, why, and what happens if you leave it.

04
Next steps
A plan you feel good about

If treatment is needed, we book your next appointment and give you written notes to take away. We also discuss how often you should come back for check-ups and whether a hygiene visit would benefit you. You leave knowing exactly where you stand.

Between visits

Making the most of
every check-up

Brushing

Brush twice a day for two minutes using a fluoride toothpaste. An electric toothbrush removes significantly more plaque than a manual one. Spit, do not rinse, after brushing.

Interdental cleaning

Floss or use interdental brushes daily. Most decay and gum disease starts between the teeth, where a toothbrush cannot reach. It takes less than two minutes and makes a substantial difference.

Diet

Limit sugary and acidic food and drinks to mealtimes rather than snacking throughout the day. Every exposure to sugar triggers an acid attack on enamel, so frequency matters as much as quantity.

Tell us early

Do not wait for your next routine appointment if something changes. Pain, sensitivity, bleeding gums, a loose tooth or any unusual patch in the mouth should be reported promptly, not left until it worsens.

How often should I come? Most adults benefit from a check-up every six months. Some patients need more frequent visits, some can go longer. We advise you individually based on your risk level.

Common questions

Check-up FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most often about dental check-ups at Wollaston Dental Practice.

01How often do I need a check-up?

Most adults benefit from a check-up every six months. Patients with a higher risk of decay or gum disease may need to come more often, while those with excellent oral health may need fewer visits. We advise you individually.

02What happens if you find something?

We explain exactly what we have found, what it means and what the options are. We will tell you what happens if it is left untreated and give you the information you need to make your own decision.

03Do you check for oral cancer?

Yes, at every check-up. We examine the tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of the mouth and throat for any unusual changes. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early.

04Do I need X-rays at every visit?

No. X-rays are taken when clinically indicated, based on your individual risk profile and time since your last set. We use low-dose digital X-rays and never take them routinely if they are not needed.

05I have not been in years. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Many of our patients come to us after a gap. We never judge, we just carry out a thorough examination and let you know where you stand. The important thing is that you have come.

06Is a check-up included in the membership plan?

Yes. All our membership plans include two check-ups per year plus a hygiene visit, spread across a simple monthly payment. Plans start from £11.35 per month.

01 · Frequency
How often do I need a check-up?

Most adults benefit from a check-up every six months. However, this is not a fixed rule. Patients who are at higher risk of decay or gum disease, those who smoke, or those with complex dental histories may need more frequent visits. Conversely, patients with very stable oral health may be fine coming every year. We assess your individual risk and recommend accordingly.

02 · Findings
What happens if you find something?

We explain exactly what we have found in plain language, show you X-rays or photographs where relevant, and discuss your options. We always explain what happens if something is monitored rather than treated immediately, so you can make an informed decision. There is no pressure. Our job is to give you the information, not to make the choice for you.

03 · Cancer screening
Do you check for oral cancer?

Yes, at every single check-up. We examine the tongue, inner cheeks, roof and floor of the mouth, lips and throat for any unusual patches, lumps, ulcers or colour changes. Oral cancer is significantly more treatable when caught early. This screening takes only a couple of minutes and is one of the most important parts of the appointment.

04 · X-rays
Do I need X-rays at every visit?

No. X-rays are only taken when clinically indicated, taking into account your dental history, risk level and how long it has been since your last set. We use low-dose digital technology, which exposes patients to a fraction of the radiation of traditional X-rays. We never take them just as a formality.

05 · Long gap
I have not been in years. Is that a problem?

Absolutely not. We see patients regularly who have not visited a dentist for many years, for all sorts of reasons. We are a private dental practice that prides itself on being welcoming and non-judgmental. We carry out a thorough assessment, explain everything we find and build a treatment plan that works for you. The important thing is that you are here now.

06 · Membership
Is a check-up included in the membership plan?

Yes. All three of our membership plans include two check-ups per year and one hygiene visit, spread across an affordable monthly payment. Plans start from £11.35 per month and mean you never have to worry about booking or budgeting for your routine visits. Members also receive discounts on any additional treatment needed.
