choose to whiten
There is no wrong reason to want a brighter smile. Here are the most common situations where patients come to us for whitening treatment.
Book a consultationWhy it beats
an over-the-counter kit
Professional whitening is not just stronger. It is safer, more consistent and designed around your specific teeth. Here is what makes it different.
Professional gels contain a significantly higher concentration of whitening agent than anything legally available over the counter. The results are more dramatic and achieved faster.
Your trays are made from impressions of your teeth. They fit precisely, ensuring the gel covers every surface evenly and does not pool on your gums, reducing sensitivity and improving results.
We examine your teeth and gums before starting. Whitening is not appropriate for everyone and applying strong gel without a prior assessment can cause damage. We rule out any contraindications first.
Your custom trays last for years. When your results fade, simply order more gel and top up at home. No new impressions, no new appointments. One investment that keeps working.
Off-the-shelf trays are one size fits all and rarely sit properly, leading to patchy whitening. Custom trays deliver consistent coverage across every tooth, front and back.
We tell you honestly what to expect before you start — including what whitening cannot fix. No surprises, no disappointment. Just a clear plan and a result you will actually be happy with.
We use the Advanced Dental whitening system — clinically proven, safe and consistently effective for our patients in Stourbridge.
How your whitening
treatment works
Our whitening treatment is simple, comfortable and done mostly at home at your own pace. Here is what to expect from start to finish.

Before any whitening takes place, we carry out a dental examination to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and that whitening is suitable for you. We discuss your goals, what shade you would like to achieve and what results to realistically expect. If you have any existing composite bonding or veneers, we flag that these will not whiten and discuss how to manage this.
We take impressions of your teeth and send them to a laboratory where your custom whitening trays are fabricated. These fit your teeth precisely, ensuring the gel makes full contact with every surface and does not spill onto your gums. You collect your trays along with your whitening gel kit at a second appointment, usually within one to two weeks.
You wear the trays at home, typically for one to two hours per day or overnight, depending on the gel concentration. Most patients achieve their desired result within two to four weeks. We show you exactly how to load and seat the trays and advise on what to expect during treatment, including any sensitivity.
Once you have reached your desired shade, occasional top-up treatments keep it there. We provide top-up gel with your kit so you can maintain your results at home. With proper care and periodic top-ups, whitening results can last for several years. Your trays are reusable — just order more gel when you need it.
Getting the most from
your whitening results
Avoid highly pigmented food and drinks for 48 hours after each whitening session. Tea, coffee, red wine, tomato-based sauces and dark berries can stain teeth while the enamel pores are open.
Some sensitivity during or after treatment is normal and temporary. Using a sensitive toothpaste during whitening and taking breaks between sessions helps manage it. It settles within a day or two.
A single top-up session every few months is all that is needed to keep your shade. Your trays are reusable, we can supply more gel whenever you need it, without a new consultation.
Composite bonding, veneers, crowns and fillings will not change colour with whitening gel. If you have visible restorations on front teeth, we can discuss replacement to match your new shade.
Thinking of bonding or veneers too? Always whiten first. Composite and porcelain are matched to your final tooth shade, so getting the order right matters.

Whiten first, then enhance further
Whitening works best as the foundation of a smile makeover. Composite bonding, veneers and other cosmetic treatments are shade-matched to your teeth, so whitening first gives you the best possible starting point.

Everything patients ask us before starting their whitening treatment at Wollaston Dental Practice.
Yes, when carried out under dental supervision. We check your teeth and gums first to ensure whitening is suitable for you. The gels we use are clinically proven and safe for enamel.
Results vary depending on the natural colour of your teeth and the type of staining. Most patients achieve a noticeably brighter result. We discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.
No. Whitening gel only works on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings will not change colour. If these are visible in your smile, we can discuss whether replacement would be worthwhile.
Some sensitivity is common during treatment and usually settles within a day or two of each session. Using a sensitive toothpaste and taking breaks between sessions helps manage it significantly.
With good care and occasional top-ups, results can last several years. Your trays are reusable — we can supply more gel as and when you need it, without a new consultation each time.
Yes, but only natural enamel will whiten. If you have composite bonding on visible teeth, whitening may create a mismatch between the bonding and your natural teeth. We advise on this at your consultation.
View composite bonding →Yes, professional teeth whitening is safe when carried out under dental supervision. Before we start, we examine your teeth and gums to make sure whitening is appropriate for you. The Advanced Dental gels we use are clinically proven and safe for enamel. Over-the-counter kits use lower concentrations with less controlled application — professional treatment gives better results more safely.
Results vary depending on your natural tooth colour and the type of staining present. Extrinsic staining from tea, coffee and wine typically responds very well. Intrinsic discolouration from medications or fluorosis may respond less dramatically. Most patients achieve a noticeably brighter result that they are very happy with. We discuss realistic expectations at your consultation so there are no surprises.
No. Whitening gel only works on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, porcelain veneers, composite bonding and white fillings will not change colour during treatment. If these restorations are on visible front teeth, whitening may result in a shade difference between them and your natural teeth. We assess this at your consultation and advise accordingly — in some cases, replacing restorations after whitening is the right approach.
Some sensitivity during or shortly after whitening sessions is common and entirely normal. It is caused by the gel temporarily opening the enamel pores and usually settles within 24 to 48 hours of each session. Using a sensitivity toothpaste throughout treatment, taking breaks between sessions and not wearing the trays for longer than recommended all help manage it effectively.
With good oral hygiene and occasional top-up treatments, whitening results can last several years. Your custom trays are reusable for as long as your teeth remain the same shape. When you want to top up, simply contact us to order more gel — no new impressions or consultation needed. We include top-up gel in your initial kit to get you started.
Yes — but with an important caveat. Composite bonding and white fillings will not whiten. If you have composite on visible front teeth, whitening your natural teeth may create a visible difference in shade. We always advise whitening before any bonding treatment for this reason. If you already have bonding and want to whiten, we can discuss whether replacing the bonding afterwards to match your new shade is worthwhile.
