What counts as a
dental emergency
Hover over each one to find out more. If yours is not listed, call us anyway.

Intense, persistent pain that does not ease with over-the-counter pain relief. Often signals an infection, cracked tooth or exposed nerve.

A bacterial infection causing throbbing pain, swelling or a visible pus pocket near a tooth or gum. Abscesses can spread quickly and need urgent treatment.

A fractured or displaced tooth, especially if painful or sharp. A knocked-out tooth can sometimes be saved if you act fast enough.

An exposed tooth can become acutely sensitive and vulnerable to further damage. We will see you quickly to repair or recement it.

Heavy or persistent bleeding from the gums or mouth that will not stop, particularly after an injury or procedure, requires prompt attention.

Swelling around the jaw, cheek or neck connected to a dental problem can indicate a spreading infection. Seek help immediately.

When you call us
in an emergency
We make emergency appointments as straightforward and stress-free as possible. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you pick up the phone.

Call us on 01384 438 143 first thing in the morning. The earlier you call, the better your chance of a same-day appointment. Our team will ask you a few quick questions about your symptoms to help us prioritise your appointment appropriately.
When you arrive, our team will greet you and make sure you feel as comfortable as possible. If you are nervous or in a lot of pain, please tell us. We will do everything we can to put you at ease before any treatment begins.
Your dentist will examine the affected area and take an x-ray if needed to understand the full picture. They will explain exactly what they have found and what your options are before anything is agreed or started.
Where possible, we will treat the problem at your emergency appointment. This might mean draining an abscess, replacing a lost filling, stabilising a broken tooth, or prescribing antibiotics. Our goal is to get you out of pain as quickly as we can.
Handling a dental
emergency at home
Take ibuprofen or paracetamol as directed. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum as this can cause a chemical burn.
Pick up by the crown, not the root. Rinse with milk or saline, not water. Replace in the socket if possible, or keep in milk. Call us immediately.
Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can cover the area and reduce sensitivity. Avoid chewing on that side until you have been seen.
Rinse with warm salty water and take pain relief as directed. Do not attempt to drain it yourself. If swelling reaches your jaw or neck, seek emergency care immediately.
When to go to A&E: If swelling affects your breathing or swallowing, call 999 immediately.
