Clean teeth,
healthier gums
Professional hygiene treatment goes far beyond a polish. Our dental hygienist removes the build-up that brushing cannot, protects your gums and leaves your mouth feeling genuinely clean.

a scale and polish
A professional hygiene appointment removes hardened tartar that brushing and flossing cannot shift, reduces the bacteria that cause gum disease and leaves your teeth cleaner than they can ever feel at home. It is one of the most effective things you can do for your long-term oral health.

The benefits of
professional hygiene
A professional hygiene visit does things no toothbrush can. Here is what regular treatment actually does for your oral health and overall wellbeing.
Tartar build-up below the gumline is the primary driver of periodontitis. Professional cleaning removes it before it causes irreversible bone loss, keeping your gums healthy and your teeth firmly in place.
Smooth, clean tooth surfaces are significantly harder for plaque to adhere to. Removing build-up and applying fluoride after your appointment strengthens enamel and lowers your cavity risk between visits.
Persistent bad breath is almost always caused by bacterial build-up on and around the teeth and gums. Professional hygiene removes the source, not just the symptoms, leaving your breath noticeably fresher.
Staining from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco is removed at every visit. Your teeth leave looking noticeably cleaner and more polished, without any bleaching or whitening treatment.
Gum disease is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, stroke and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Keeping your gums healthy is one of the most impactful things you can do for your general health.
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Regular professional hygiene, combined with good home care, is the most reliable way to keep all your natural teeth as you age.
Ready to book? Most patients benefit from a hygiene visit every six months. New patients are always welcome at our private dental practice in Stourbridge.
What happens at your
hygiene appointment
Every hygiene visit is thorough and unhurried. Here is what happens from start to finish so you know exactly what to expect.

We ask how your teeth and gums have been since your last visit and check for any changes in your medical history or medications. If it is your first hygiene appointment with us, we take a little more time to understand your dental background and any specific concerns.
We measure the depth of the pockets around your teeth to check for any signs of gum disease and compare results with previous visits. This monitoring is one of the most valuable parts of the appointment, catching any early changes before they become a problem.
We remove tartar from above and below the gumline using ultrasonic and hand instruments, then polish the teeth to remove surface staining. Where needed, we use Airflow technology and finish with a fluoride varnish. We work at your pace and check in throughout.
We finish by reviewing your brushing and interdental cleaning technique and recommending any changes. We tailor everything to your specific mouth, not generic advice. You leave with a clear picture of your gum health and exactly what to do before your next visit.
Making your hygiene
treatment last
Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after a fluoride varnish application. Some mild sensitivity in the hours after treatment is normal, particularly if we have cleaned below the gumline.
Use a soft-bristled brush or electric toothbrush twice daily. Brush for at least two minutes and pay particular attention to the gumline. Spit, do not rinse, after brushing to keep fluoride in contact with the teeth.
Floss or use interdental brushes every day. This is the single most impactful change most patients can make. We recommend the correct size of interdental brush for your gaps at your appointment.
Tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco are the main causes of tooth staining. Reducing these, or rinsing with water after them, helps keep your teeth looking their best between visits.
Notice something new? If your gums bleed persistently, feel sore or swell between visits, contact us rather than waiting for your next routine appointment.

Pair it with
a dental check-up
A hygiene visit and a dental check-up together give you the most complete picture of your oral health. Our membership plans include both, from just £11.35 per month.
Dental hygiene FAQs
Everything you need to know about hygiene appointments at Wollaston Dental Practice.
For most patients it is comfortable throughout. If your gums are inflamed or we need to clean deeper pockets, there can be some sensitivity. We work gently and check in with you throughout. Local anaesthetic is available if needed.
Most patients benefit from a hygiene visit every six months, alongside their dental check-up. Patients with gum disease, implants or a higher risk of decay are often seen every three to four months. We advise you individually.
A hygiene appointment removes surface staining, which can make your teeth noticeably brighter. It will not change the natural shade of your teeth. For a more dramatic result, we offer professional teeth whitening separately.

Most patients benefit from a hygiene visit every six months, ideally alongside their routine dental check-up. We always advise you individually based on your gum health and risk profile.
A professional hygiene appointment removes surface staining caused by tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco, which can leave your teeth looking noticeably cleaner and brighter. However, it does not change the underlying shade of your enamel. For a more significant whitening result, we offer professional teeth whitening using custom-fitted trays and professional-grade gel.

Yes, please do. Bleeding gums are one of the most common signs of gum disease, and a professional hygiene appointment is exactly the right response. Many patients avoid seeing a hygienist because their gums are sore or bleed, which only allows the underlying problem to progress. Treating it early makes a significant difference to long-term outcomes.
